Stratford, Conn., residents address racial equity issues in policing, education, and town leadership

In 2006, following the arrest of two African Americans—a teenager and a town councilman, Stratford, Conn., launched community-wide dialogues on racism. Organizers established an oversight committee, Citizens Addressing Racial Equity (C.A.R.E.), to coordinate the efforts of groups that formed to work on action ideas. Stratford became one eight communities that took part in "Communities Creating Racial Equity," an initiative by Everyday Democracy to help communities deepen and sustain community change on issues around racial equity. The dialogues generated three citizen-driven action teams on racial equity in policing, education, and town leadership.
