Tyndall, S.D., celebrates effort to revitalize community

Tyndall Horizons celebrates

Residents are invited to a "graduation party" which will be held Tuesday, June 24 at the Tyndall Auditorium at 7 p.m. Free refreshments will be served during the evening.

The event will mark the end of the two-year Horizons program which started in August of 2006, sponsored by South Dakota State University Extension Services and funded by Northwest Area Foundation. The Tyndall community was one of 21 communities in South Dakota which were invited to participate in this program.

Over 55 residents of Tyndall, including youth, volunteered in the different phases of the program, which included study circles, LeadershipPlenty, community visioning and community coaching and action.

Out of the study circles, goals for improvements in Tyndall were identified. These goals include the Cavalier Corner (youth center), Bargain Shoppe, the Tyndall website (www.tyndallsd.com), LeadershipPlenty for high school, public policy committee, economic development coordinator and the Tyndall Community Foundation. Recently, two more projects have been added as goals: daycare and frisbee golf in the park. While some of the goals are still being developed, there are many successes and accomplishments, thanks to all the volunteers and financial donations from the community.

Tyndall will be presented with a check from Northwest Area Foundation in addition to some other financial donations. The exciting development is the formation of the Tyndall Community Foundation, which is a public tax exempt organization created to attract and distribute charitable funds for the benefit of the Tyndall community. Noel Hamiel, from the South Dakota Community Foundation, will be present to offer more insight and answer questions about this unique program for small towns in South Dakota.

Tyndall's Horizon coach, Dave Olson and other SDSU Extension Staff will be present to mark this special occasion. Everyone, including families, is encouraged to attend this special event in celebration of the accomplishments and opportunities Horizons has offered to the Tyndall community.
