A step forward

In a move likely to please no one, but necessary nonetheless, Stratford Mayor James R. Miron has at least taken some action toward building a new animal shelter in town. Deciding on a "study circles" process, the mayor wants as many as 100 residents to work in small groups to study the issue and make a recommendation on the best place to build a shelter.

Because no one had been budging — certainly not a group of residents strongly opposed to using a 1.5-acre Access Road site — and nearly everyone in town agrees a new shelter is in dire need, the mayor deserves credit for at least making a positive step here. Though some have derided the plan or dismissed it as a stalling tactic, it's a legitimate means to find out what people in town are really thinking.

When a final plan is drawn up, at least no one will be able to accuse the mayor of not listening to the people. Whether that will be enough to please some people remains to be seen.
