The Northwest Area Foundation, in conjunction with the National Center for Everyday Democracy, provided funding so that four individuals from St. James could attend the National Everyday Democracy Conference in Denver June 12-14.

Attending the conference on behalf of St. James and diverse communities within St. James were Eva Esparza (business/ Latino/ Hispanic), Sue Harris (school), Don Crissinger-Clark (community of faith), and Joe McCabe (city government).

The National Center for Everyday Democracy (formerly Study Circles), out of Connecticut, provided the original study circle training for the Horizons poverty reduction program. This model of civic engagement involves the public in thoughtful, guided dialogue on important community issues. Through the process, ideas to solve community issues are generated.

Study Circles provides the community with a process for people and organizations to engage in meaningful discussions and action ideas that can bring about a renewed sense of civic engagement. Working together and collaborating on common community issues builds stronger relationships and a renewed sense of hope within community.

Training during the conference provided the St. James delegation with guides for doing Study Circles on racism/prejudice and education. Building community around these important issues will help to move St. James forward in both thought and action.

Interested people who would like to be a part of this process, please contact Community Education or City Hall.

The four who attended the conference look forward to bringing the study circles to St. James, citing the following quote: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead
