Five-town region in Maine to build citizen participation

Workshop focuses on roles of citizens

The Community Wellness Coalition for the Kittery, Eliot, York and South Berwick region and Everyday Democracy will be holding an introduction to citizen participation tonight. The event is planned to give residents a look into how to participate in town government on an every level in a workshop titled, "The New Public Hearing."

Any interested residents of the region are welcome to attend from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Kittery Point, to discuss issues that lead to participation — or the lack thereof. Among the questions to be considered are why some residents choose to participate and others only to cast their ballots, how town leaders can encourage conversation during meetings and while developing goals, and whether consensus is possible before committing public funds and whether consensus is necessary.

Kittery Town Council Chairman Jeff Thomson said earlier this week that he will be attending. The night will also include a 25th anniversary Community-Building Award presentation.
